For the last 5 – 10 years it has all been about new modern square lines, pop out counters, sound systems, fancy lights and even flat screen TV’s , but things have changed.
There is a roaring trade in old retro vehicles being converted to catering units. Whether it’s an old Bedford ice cream van, a VW camper or Wahacas Citroen 1958 HY van there is something special about an old retro vehicle when it’s converted lovingly, and there’s no doubt these kind of units to have kerbside appeal.
With trading sites getting harder and harder to find it seems that the more unusual your operation the more likely you are to get a site. One ice cream operator told me that this was the best way to get in with shopping centres.
There are of course disadvantages to these old lovelies, the main one being that if you have to drive or ride long distances to a site its then when you realise just how far vehicles, engines and seats have come.
